Left the Twin Cities behind today, on my way to Kansas City on the way to I-70 and Las Vegas. I am taking two antique chairs back to Calif, plus two garden spades. And carefully buried under the sturdy liner in the hatch back are prints from my mother-in-law, including two of these intaglio prints she had kept hidden for forty years.

The wind turbines never got overwhelming on this stretch of I-35 to Des Moines. I really appreciate when some thought is given to artistically arranging them in small batches of 3 or 5. When they overwhelm the terrain they feel no better than high-voltage power lines.
What was slightly disturbing on this road was a rest stop that portrayed a fair and balanced memorial to the Civil War, including a Confederate flag in relief artwork and a wall that portrayed the Confederate perspective as equal to the wall of Union perspective, tied together by a massive chain. So the pioneers of Iowa who gave their life to hold the union together while opposing slavery are equally honored as rebels from other states who fought to tear the union apart to preserve slavery. I realize the unique status Confederate fighters have in our history (as citizen enemy combatants as opposed to foreign enemy combatants), but c'mon. The history will live on without monuments like this.

Stopped to camp in a river valley just outside of Des Moines. Back to life on the road.
